Terms of Service
Last updated 16 October 2026
These terms apply when you buy a brief from Untold Kin. Please read them before you pay. By paying, you agree to them.
Untold Kin is a trading name of Shabu Pty Ltd, ABN 78 605 154 345, 9 Lawson Street, Southport QLD 4215 ("we", "us"). You can reach us at hello@untoldkin.com.
1. What you are buying
A sourced brief: a short written report, sent by email, that works on one specific historical question about your family. The price is A$249 including GST, unless a valid promo code gives you a lower price at checkout.
We search online sources only, such as digitised records, indexes and newspapers. A person checks every source we cite before the brief is sent. We usually deliver within 48 to 72 hours of payment. That is a target, not a promise; if a case needs longer, we will email you.
2. What a brief does not include
- Searching for, contacting or locating living people.
- Reading or interpreting DNA matches or DNA test results.
- Building a full family tree or researching more than one question.
- Visiting archives, libraries or offices in person, or searching paper records that are not online.
- Ordering records, certificates or copies on your behalf.
Before you pay, our intake form checks whether your question fits. If it clearly does not, we tell you and do not charge you.
3. What we cannot promise
Not every answer exists online, and some records were never made or did not survive. We cannot promise that we will find the answer you hope for.
What we report is evidence, with our view of how strong it is (for example confirmed, probable or a possible lead). It is not legal or official proof of identity, descent, citizenship or entitlement, and should not be used as that.
Online records can contain errors, and websites change. Links that work when we send the brief may later move or stop working.
4. Your case after delivery
Your case stays open for 30 days after we deliver the brief. In that time, if you send us something new on the same question (for example a document you ordered, information from a relative, or a DNA match), we will look again and send up to two short follow-up updates.
A different question (another person, the next generation, or a sibling's line) is a new brief. If you book a new brief within 60 days of delivery of your last one, the price is A$149 including GST.
Where the next step is one only you can take, the brief may include a drafted request, where to send it, and a typical fee range. You decide whether to send it.
5. Third-party fees
Some next steps cost money, such as certificates, archive copies, translations or DNA tests. You pay those directly to the provider. We never collect, handle or add a margin to these fees, and any fee range we give is a guide only.
6. Our refund promise
If your first brief contains no new cited find and no useful negative result beyond what you already gave us, we will refund the full price.
A new cited find is a source we can link to that you did not already give us. A useful negative result is a documented search that rules something out and goes beyond your own notes, such as a named index search with no match.
This refund promise applies to your first brief only. Follow-up updates do not reopen it. To ask for a refund, email hello@untoldkin.com within 30 days of delivery with your case ID. Refunds go back to the card you paid with.
This promise is in addition to your rights under the Australian Consumer Law (see section 9).
7. Payment and promo codes
Payment is taken by Stripe at checkout. We do not see or store your full card details. Promo codes, including members' codes, apply only as stated when issued, cannot be exchanged for cash, and cannot be applied after payment.
8. What we need from you
- Give us accurate information. We work from what you tell us, and wrong names, dates or places can send the search the wrong way.
- Only upload documents and photos you have the right to share with us. You keep any rights you have in them; you let us use them only to work on your case.
- Use the brief for your own family history. Please do not resell it.
9. Your rights under Australian Consumer Law
Our services come with guarantees that cannot be excluded under the Australian Consumer Law. Nothing in these terms excludes, restricts or changes those guarantees or any other right you have that the law says cannot be excluded.
10. Limits on our liability
To the extent the law allows, our total liability to you for anything to do with a brief is limited to the price you paid for that brief, and we are not liable for indirect or consequential loss. Where the Australian Consumer Law lets us limit our liability for a failure to meet a consumer guarantee, our liability is limited to supplying the service again or paying you the cost of having it supplied again.
11. Privacy
We use the information you give us to research your question, deliver your brief and contact you about your case. Our Privacy Policy at untoldkin.com/privacy explains how we collect, use and store personal information.
12. Changes to these terms
We may update these terms from time to time. The version on this page when you pay is the one that applies to your brief. The date at the top shows when they last changed.
13. Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of Queensland, Australia. You and we agree that the courts of Queensland, and courts that can hear appeals from them, can decide any dispute.
14. Contact
